Young Producers Kellace Awards show: MK Winners come up Big
Young Producers is a second year program that was designed to immerse Kellogg and Wallace 8th graders into the world of video production and motivate them to bring their ideas to the screen. They learn to storyboard, create scripts, assess equipment needs, utilize mics, tripods, lighting and green screens to help them produce an effective segment of digital media. They learned the ins and outs of video editing to make their vision come to life. The Young Producers submit their final works (meeting all requirements) to the Kellace Awards selection committee.
The Kellace Awards mirrors award ceremonies such as the Oscars and the Golden Globes. Students from both middle schools submit their videos in the hopes that it could be nominated for one or more categories such as Best Overall Video, Best Script, Best Editing, Best Special Effects and more.
The culminating event gives students a chance to showcase their work. It is inspiring to see the variety of creativity and innovation used by the students to produce their videos. This year's event was a lot of fun and we are pleased to announce this year's Kellogg Winners:

the March Pep Rally: A Knockout good time! With March Madness in full swing, the Kellogg Community, students and staff, took part in their own version of the madness and partook in the Annual Knock Out tournament. Students participated in the preliminary tournament during REACH the week of the rally in order for grade levels to identify the top two boys and top two girls that would then take their skills to the pep rally finals. Ultimately, the finals came down to our top two staff winners, Mr. Schuman and Mrs. Baylock, and our top two student winners, Sophia Chrostowski and Noah Tharldson. What a wild and exciting finish! Foul shot after foul shot was dropping and everyone was in their groove. It was a nail biter but Mr. Schuman took the 2017 Knock Out tournament title. However, the pep rally is never complete without the participation of the awesome Kellogg Jazz Band greeting students and staff at the door, the Kella Pellaz singing a beautiful acapella version of the National Anthem, and our fantastic Cultural Dance team performing three wonderful dances. Can Mr. Schuman have a repeat trophy next year? We can't wait until our next annual Knock Out Tournament!

2017 Fuel Up To Play 60 Smoothie Challenge
By: Sophia Rathbun
Fuel Up To Play 60 hosted their smoothie challenge Thursday after the break. There were about ten teams and each team had different and unique smoothies. Some of the smoothie names were Banana Blitz, (which was the winning smoothie), White Forest, (which was my group’s smoothie), Back to Fall, (made of all ingrediants connected to fall), and Cinnamon Kale Quench, (which was the smoothie that the team Ms Hill was in created). It started after school, and each team had ingredients from their recipe on their table. They started by cleaning our hands, putting on gloves, signing poster cards for Farmer Joe and one of the judges.
Then the participants blended the ingredients uses a blender and spent about 10 minutes on that. Then, we presented the smoothies to the judges and held up our hand-made posters. The judges tried them and wrote the results on a piece of paper. They give recognition to 3 teams before they announced the winners, these teams were team 9,7,and 5. The winner was team 7 with their Banana Blitz. Some of the ingredients they used were low fat milk, peaches, carrots, strawberries and bananas. Remember these are only some of the ingredients and I’m sure they used other stuff in their smoothie. Once the winner was announced we took a group photo and team 7 took a picture with Ms Leslie holding a check given by the dairy council to our school. Everyone there did amazing, and they all had fun with it. We are waiting for next year’s contest so we can find out about all the amazing smoothies! |

Rope Field Trip
By: Sophia Rathbun
The Monday after spring break, Ms Leslie’s current wellness class went to the Challenge Course in Newington, near the New Britain and Newington border. The class started out with a few whole class activities. One such game was when we tried to use our hands to make the sound of bubble wrap. One person would clap and then another immediately after until the last person in the circle clapped. Our record time was 3.2 seconds! After, we played a hula hoop game. We made a circle and each had a hula hoop in front of us. The commands were right, left, spin, and jumping jack. The “right” command was to leave your current hula hoop, and prevent the hula hoop to your left from falling by holding it up still and standing behind it. The “left” command was the same as the right command except that you went left. The “spin” command was to do a full rotation and prevent your hula hoop from falling down all at the same time. The “jumping jack command” was to do a jumping jack and hold your hula hoop up fast enough. There was no cheating. Then we got into pairs and decided with our partners which one was “amazing” and which one was “awesome”. I happened to get into the “awesome” group and we got to do the trolley game. It was a game where you had to rescue stuffed animals from the imaginary lava using a trolley. The trolley was a piece of wood with four pieces of roop in each corner that attached to a metal piece which attached to a wire. The trolley moved with two ropes on each side. The other team did a tire game, which I don’t know the rules because I wasn’t in the “amazing” group. After we finished that activity we had lunch and then came the fun part, the cat walk and the rock wall. The cat walk was a wooden cat walk. With two poles on the left and right side going vertically, and another connecting them going horizontally. Once everyone got their harnesses and helmets on, we took turns connecting rope to our harnesses and climbing up the two |

vertical poles, stepping on iron staples indented into the wood. The feeling of getting onto the log once you’ve finished climbing is kind of scary. But once you continue walking on it you feel more comfortable. You slowly descended backward off the log and into a hula hoop once you were done. It was really fun! I think it teaches you that things that look scary might not be as scary as they seem.
The rockwall was basically the same as any rockwall but it was definitely more challenging than it looked. It was difficult, but not impossible to get to the top. Only one or two people got to the top on both sides of the rockwall. It really exercised your leg muscles. The people waiting to get on the rockwall gave advice to the people on the wall, telling them which rock to grab or put their foot on.
Overall, it was pretty fun experience and I would love to do it again. The next people to do it are Ms Quaresima’s homeroom kids!

Drama Club Post Show wrap up
By Allison Wnuk
Once Upon a Mattress, performed by the talented students of Martin Kellogg and directed by the lovely and talented Mrs. Daigle and the music director Miss Bocola.
“The play represented our town as a whole, marvelous and well-put together.” -8th grade student. The actors gave hours and hours of effort into making this play perfect, as well as the directors and the other staff that helped out! These adults gave days of their time to create a well-running crew of stage crew and actors. With everyone’s help this play was incredible. “It was so much fun! Everyone loved it! Whoever wasn’t in it, is missing out on A LOT.” -Natalia Abdou, (8th Grade). The actors looked animated and professional on stage and put in a lot of effort into making the show what it is. The songs were amazing and I don’t think anyone blinked during the performance because they didn’t want to miss a thing! Congratulations to the cast and goodbye to the 5, 6, and 7th graders, and also, goodbye to Mrs. Daigle and Miss. Bocola who made this production BETTER than it will ever be. From all of the 8th graders, thank you for this opportunity and we are excited to see the new things that will come in the next years from the Martin Kellogg Middle School Drama Club!
