Annual march madness knock out
March is here and it's time for Martin Kellogg's Annual Knock-Out Tournament! Thursday's pre-lims narrowed down the grade level participants to play in the championship round at the pep rally. However, it is not just the students who will be working for bragging rights, but also the teachers! The entire school was greeted by the amazing Kellogg Jazz Pep Band, conducted by Mr. Bell. Marty, our lion, was also welcoming the students and staff into the auditorium. After a beautiful rendition of the National Anthem, performed by our talented KellaPellaz, the knockout tournament was off and running. The grade 5-8 winners for the girls went first and 8th grader, Adriana Romano, was crowned the champion of the girls. Next up, grades 5-8 boys took to the court, and 5th grader, AJ Galante was crowned the champion of the boys. After those exciting rounds, the staff headed out. Anyone driving by Kellogg at this time would think the NCAA championship was occurring in the gym the cheering was so loud! What an exciting round as one by one the staff was getting knocked out. The top two teachers to make it out alive were Mr. Jarvis and Mrs. Maslak! With some time remaining, the two teachers took on the two student winners, and once again, AJ Galante came out on top as our 2018 Martin Kellogg Knockout Champion! Congrats, AJ! A great time was had by all and what a way to finish the week! In the words of Dick Vitale, "it was definitely awesome, baby!!"

Newington News By: Mike Silva
When you think of places with cool and wonky things, they’re usually places you want to go to. Well, there’s cool things right here in Newington- no out of state travel needed. (Drumroooooll, please.) Newington actually has the smallest (natural) waterfall in the country!
Location: Mill Pond Park Name: Mill Pond Falls Interesting Info: These falls are celebrated each fall (ha, ha, ha) during the aptly named Waterfall Festival. If you go to this event, chances are you get to bestow your eyes upon the falls. So, before you go looking for the weird and wild, take a moment to appreciate your town- you may just be surpised at its own amazing treasures. |

ST. Patrick's Day

A SHOE BOX can be a camera?
During the beginning weeks of February, professional artist and photographer, Mr. Thomas Mezzanotte (Italian for Mr. Midnight), was at Kellogg for his annual pin-hole camera activity. The two day workshop consisted of an overview of how the eye is similar to the camera obscura while projecting images from the outdoors onto a screen. The images are projected just as they are onto our retinas, upside down. Thanks to our brains, images are turned right side up. The second day of the workshop focuses on using an everyday shoe box as a camera. The shoe boxes were prepped in advance in order to be sure no light could enter. They were painted black on the inside and any holes were covered up with electrical tape before taking any pictures. Mr. Mezzanotte then gave the kids special photo paper and it was placed on the back of the 'camera'.

A small hole was put on the cover of the shoe box and it was covered by a flap of tape as well. The kids were told that they couldn't move the tape before taking the picture because no light was allowed into the box. Otherwise, the picture would have been ruined. Mr. M instructed the kids on how to take a picture and they went outside for their photo op. In order to take a picture, the shoe box needs to be placed onto a chair, a steady surface, pointed towards an object - in this case, a student. The partner stands behind the camera and on Mr. M's count, removes the tape and then places it back on after 3 seconds. Any longer exposure will ruin the photo. After this, Mr. M. develops the proofs in a special machine that turns the picture around and creates a much clearer image. The students get to go home with an actual photo that they took with their camera to hang up in their fridge! This is a high interest workshop and we hope he can return again next year for the incoming fourth graders! If you ask any sixth, seventh, or eighth grader, they will tell you they remember these days fondly and still have the pictures they took. Thank you, Mr. Midnight!
