Kellogg Games Never Disappoint!!
Check out some great pics from the 2018 MKMS Kellogg Games!
Pillar Pride
The students at Martin Kellogg celebrated their third Pillar Pride day on Friday, April 26th. Each quarter we celebrate the students who have displayed our four pillars and each grade level participates in an activity. Grade five was involved in a rousing round robin of volleyball games and grade six utilized their classroom space for different board games, card games and coloring activities. Grade seven went outside to enjoy some fresh air on the blacktop and grade eight spent time in their classrooms doing yoga and board games, while enjoying time to socialize and relax. Keep up that positive behavior, Kellogg!
The sixth-graders (pictured) have demonstrated the four pillars at Kellogg for the month of April, and they were recognized by their peers in front of the entire grade. Each person received a Pay-It-Forward bracelet and was given a large paw for showing integrity, pride, responsibility, and respect. Congratulations.
featureD Teacher: Mrs. Carole Gauger
At the end of this school year, Martin Kellogg will be losing one of its best as Mrs. Gauger is retiring after 28 wonderful years serving the Newington Public Schools. We interviewed Mrs. Gauger and here are some things you may not have known about her! She is one crafty woman!
- What is your position here at Martin Kellogg? I am a Special Education teacher
- How long have you been teaching here? This is my 28th year here in Newington.
- Do you have a favorite memory? The great experiences taking the 7th graders to Williamsburg, Virginia and Washington DC. It’s a wonderful way to see students learn - by experiencing it.
- What was your favorite part about your job? The very talented and dedicated people I work with.
- What are some of your hobbies? My husband and I run an organic farm that keeps us very busy. I also quilt, knit, spin, and sew so I have many outside interests. My husband and I also love to travel and plan on doing more of that in retirement.
- Do you have any pets? We have two Labradors, one barn cat, and 85 chickens!!
- Have you always lived in Connecticut? If not, where else have you lived? I have lived in CT my whole life growing up in the southern part of the state in Trumbull. I then moved to New Haven for college, and finally settled in Harwinton, where I've lived for the past 33 years.
- Do you have any children, or grandchildren? We have two adult daughters, Shawna and Brittany, who are both married to wonderful husbands. They each have two children. Shawna, and her husband Chris, have Maris who is 8 and Chase who is 6. Brittany, and her husband Lev, have two daughters: Sydney who is 3 and Adley, our youngest, is 6 months old.
- What are your plans for the summer? Farming, like every other summer, with our CSA program and the Farmer’s Markets. We will be very busy!
- Since this is your last year here at Kellogg, what are your plans for retirement? Once the farming season is over I will spend some more time with our grandchildren, and I might even be able to be a guest reader in their elementary schools. Then we plan on spending more time at our Florida house during the winter.
Congratulations, Mrs. Gauger! We will certainly miss you but we wish you a happy, healthy retirement!
does connecticut have the best pizza?
By Michael Silva
People say Connecticut has the best pizza… and let’s face it… it’s true. Here the best pizza places will be revealed!
This list will go from town to town.
FRANK PEPE’S
Location: New Haven + West Hartford
History: This location was founded in 1925 by Frank Pepe. He was born in an Italian town, known as Maiori. He was born on April 15th, 1893. He died on September 6th, 1969. He was an immigrant who got his first job in New Haven. He returned to Italy to fight in WW1 a couple years later. He married Filomena Volpi, who also came from Maiori, in 1919. They returned to New Haven to build their new lives in 1920.
Review of Cheese Pizza:
Very delicious, indeed. It has all elements a pizza should. You can tell the cheese was delicately spread over all areas of the pizza. Pizzanatics ought to give it a chance. I prefer this over Yanni’s because I like thin-crust pizza over the Greek style of Yanni’s. You’re definitely going to ultra-crave this if you are in love with this oh so thin-crust pizza type. When eating this, it’s all but expected to do the ‘I didn’t really taste it; I need another slice’ strategy to sneakily get more.

YANNI’S
Location: Right here in Newington
History: In 1978, Paradise Pizza of New Britain was founded. The family that owned this place during this time period had its next generation own Yanni’s.
Reviews of Different Pizza Types:
Cheese: The melty cheese blends perfectly with the dough. The pure color of the mozzerella cheese lets one know it’s been bubbling in the oven. Sweet! (That fact, not the pizza…). Although a simple creature with a simple blend between the dough and the cheese, it is a masterpiece in pizzalogy. The crust is thick and oh so crunchable.. It’s a must for crunch-lovers.
Pepperoni: The adding of meat onto the pizza is so delicate and perfectly done. The multitude of flavors is truly astonishing. It’s everything about the cheese pizza plus the fresh taste of the pepperoni. It’s a simple taste, the pepperoni, but it gets the job done. It’s not busy or overdone. It is a masterpiece. No wonder pepperoni currently ranks as the most liked pizza topping. You've got hidden gems like Yanni’s, with its amazing works of art!

Fuel up to play 60's Pizza Challenge was a delicious success
Mrs. Leslie and Mrs. Batista coordinated a great event for FUEL UP TO PLAY 60 in April. It included a pizza making challenge, a video creating challenge and even a visit to the SMARTBUS. On the first day of the event, students were able to work in groups to create their own pizza creations, using any toppings they wanted. The pizzas were baked in the MK cafeteria and then judges began to taste test for their favorites. The pizzas were scored on different criteria. The winning pizzas were created by these students.
Each of the winning pizza recipes were available for MK students to try in the cafeteria on select days during lunch. Congratulations to all of our talented pizza makers!
- Alex Lengenfelder, James Mills, and Bree Norton
- Kaidyn Rodriguez and Allyse Hollfelder,
- Marcus Brown and Jonathan Annino

6th Grade Science
Students took an ordinary cup filled with water and an index card to cover the cup's opening. Their goal? To keep the water inside the cup while the cup was turned upside down. As expected, a lot of students observed gravity when the water poured out. However, after a couple of attempts, students figured out how to keep the water inside the flipped cup with only an index card. Is it magic? No, it's science which is what they are trying to figure out. This challenge allowed students to "think like a scientist" to eventually connect back to destructive weather.
Water Conservation Engineering Challenge
The week before April vacation, the sixth-graders were engaged in our first Water Conservation Engineering Challenge. Sixth-graders were asked to brainstorm ways to conserve our limited freshwater by inventing a brand new idea. Congratulations to all the sixth-graders that participated in this challenge. Mrs. Tyler and Mr. Schuman were quite impressed, and it was a very difficult task to narrow the entries down for the final round. Congratulations to the following four teams that won the final round: Gloria Gonzalez, Maja Grebowiec, Bruno Stosur and Sebastian Baez, Sophia Rathbun and Jessica Hoydilla. These inventors impressed our very own Shark Tank panel to win the entire challenge. Their ideas were unique, creative, and feasible. These sixth-graders also impressed the Shark Tank with their professional presentation.
Winners - Sophia Rathbun and Jessica Hoydilla (not pictured); Bruno Stosur and Sebastian Baez; Maja Grebowiec; Gloria Gonzalez
A successful Willy Wonka show at NCTC
By Michaela Feldblum
Recently, I was involved in the Newington Childrens Theater Company ( NCTC) production of Willy Wonka. During this show I was Phineous Trout the reporter/interviewer. We had 10 shows in total and the performances were moved to John Wallace MIddle School because there was a big waiting list for tickets. In my opinion this show was really fun. I have been acting at NCTC since I was five so I might think it is more fun than other people do. Some other kids from Martin Kellogg that did this show was Cassy B, Kat O, Brooke Hendon, Bella Longo, and Sophia. If you enjoy acting and being in a fun, creative environment you should think about checking out all the great programs at NCTC. There are lots of awesome shows to be part of throughout the year, and in the summer too!

3rd Annual Young Producers program highlights student creativty
On June 5, 8th grade students from both Wallace and Kellogg gathered at MK for the KELLACE AWARDS, the final culminating awards show for the Young Producers Program. Student producers worked hard all year to plan, write, film and edit their own productions. Judges decided which ones were best and then the awards show happened. A red carpet, trophies, raffles and all the productions live on the big screen make the night a lot of fun.
All of the productions were wonderful, but here were the Kellogg winners this year!

Adam Sandler Biography
By Michael Silva
We ALL know who Adam Sandler is…. And if you don’t, well, you’re kind of missing out.
He’s a great comedian who is on many TV programs, most notably movies. There’s more to him than just his hilarious-ness. Here’s the 1st-ever MKMS biography of Adam Sandler!!
Birth- Sep 9th, 1966
He always was the clown of his class. He didn’t think of becoming a comedian at first.
Early Career:
At age 17 he began to aspire to become a comedian, after his brother encouraged him to perform at some ‘Boston Comedy Club’.
Comedy Roles:
Billy Madison (Feb 10th, 1995).
(SPOILERS)
Plot: Billy is the son of Brian, a man who made it big in the hotel industry. His dad wants him to take over the business one day, but he’s extremely immature (and he’s 27!). His Dad thinks about handing over the business to Eric Gordon, a co-worker. Billy hates him, so to proves himself worthy to inherit the business, he must go through all the grades again (including kindergarden!).
You Don’t Mess With the Zohan (2008)
(SPOILERS)
Plot: He plays an guy from Israel who fakes his death so he can move on over to America, so he can go forward in his dream to be a hair dresser.
Bedtime Stories (2008)
(SPOILERS)
Plot: In this comedy, Sandler plays a dude who tells his neice and nephew stories… that begin to come true.
Just Go With It (2011)
(SPOILERS)
Plot: In this movie, Adam plays a guy who gathers a lady and her kids as his pretend family. He does this in efforts to get together with a lady he likes/ has a crush on.
Now you know more about Adam Sandler. He’s obviously very cool, and now you know more about him so you can boast about ‘I’m not just a typical fan that doesn’t do their research for the person they’re watching on TV’!

GRAVITY FALLS A SHOW CREATED BY: ALEX HIRSCH
By Michael Silva
Gravity Falls is a TV show on Disney Channel, and one of my favorites. To this day, I still record episodes to watch, even though it stopped around 2 years ago. I’ll give you info about it.
Main Characters: Dipper Pines, Mabel Pines, Soos, Grunkle Stanley, Grunkle Stanford, and Wendy. Also, Bill Cipher (the main bad guy).
PLOT:
Dipper and Mabel Pines live in California. However, they had to go to the small Oregon town of Gravity Falls for the summer. It’s not one’s typical run-of-the-mill vacation, because this town is full of mysteries, secrets, conspiracies, and creatures like gnomes and manotaurs (according to the TV show, half man and half ‘taur’). Dipper tries to figure out the author of the journal he has in the show, eventually finding out it’s his great uncle Stanford. Bill Cipher uses his manipulation and outright possession to bring about the apocolyptic event known as Weirdmageddon, which is really very weird. Bill’s a dream demon, and Stanley and Stanford, twins, switch identities in the final episode, so when Stanley has Bill go into his mind, Bill thought he was going into Stanford’s mind, which is what Bill wanted to do to know how to expand his weirdness out of Gravity Falls. Once in, a memory erase gun is used on Stanley, and Bill is erased from existance…. Supposedly. Check out theory videos on Bill Cipher coming back. People theorize that the words he said before he was destroyed was a means to… hey, check out the videos for yourself!
WHY I LIKE IT SO MUCH:
The show gets really deep. There’s a lot of foreshadowing and things that make you understand other things. For example, Stanley lost his brother, one would find out later, which explains why he was so upset when a wax replica of himself was murdered; intresting stuff. What’s also cool is that in the show there are secrets in the background and backwards messages. When the episode is reversed/backwards, you hear things say some pretty interesting and sometimes funny stuff. There are also many ciphers that can be deciphered to reveal hidden messages. The show is extremely funny, too. Bill Cipher, although a terrible bad guy, is actually a really funny villan.
RATING:
It’s a fabulous show that I recommend people watch. I give it 5/5 and 10/10. It’s really an AWESOME show.
GENRE:
If you watch the show, you’d know the genre is:
All in all, Gravity Falls is a funny, mysterious and at times scary (due to the monsters in Gravity Falls) animated TV show. Did I mention it’s HIL--ARIOUS?!! Everyone who likes TV should watch this show. It’s one of my favorite TV shows ever in existence.

science across the grade levels
Students in Mrs. Maslak's science classes had some opportunities to pair up with 7th and 8th grade students for various reasons. On April 5th, the class visited two of Mr. Gray's 8th grade science classes to view their presentations on the Earth, Moon, and Sun System unit. The 8th graders created awesome models of the system and explained how it worked to the fifth graders. They were also quizzed at the end of the presentation, and asked to give feedback as well. The fifth graders were able to have insightful discussions as they were in the midst of their own Earth, Moon, and Sun System unit. On April 27th, Mrs. Laccone's 7th grade class came down to present their findings on why fossils from other continents can be found in North America. They explained that this was because of the once collective 'continent' called Pangea. Prior to the continents splitting apart, dinosaurs roamed around on large land mass. The fifth graders not only got to provide feedback to the seventh graders, but they learned something new at the same time. Finally, on May 11th, Mrs. Maslak's classes were ready for Mr. Gray's classes to visit so they could challenge them to their board games based on the Earth, Moon, and Sun system unit. The eighth grade students stated that, "the fifth graders made their questions tough but the games were fun and user friendly". Mr. Gray and Mrs. Maslak were very proud of the work the fifth graders did and for the cooperative game playing during the two periods the classes visited. Please enjoy the pictures of the hard work done by the fifth, seventh, and eighth grade science students!
6th Grade Science- Open Inquiry Experiments
As we wrap up the school year, sixth-graders were busy investigating how differences in air pressure affect weather. Then students developed their own open-inquiry experiment. They brainstormed their own problem statement, wrote out their hypothesis, developed a materials list, worked on their own procedures, and created their own data table. Once done, they were set out to discover answers to their problem statement (question). Students enjoyed working like a scientist by collaborating with peers, collecting data, and then drawing conclusions from the observations. Students were challenged to think about the validity of their experiment as well.
National Scratch Day
By Cora Tracey
Have you ever wondered how to code? Have you ever wanted to code, start out easy, but be free to choose whatever you want in projects? If you answered yes to one (or both) of those questions, scratch is the place for you! It is a easier coding site because it is drag and drop block coding, so it is not all typing like JavaScript and Phython. If you already have a Scratch account and check the site often, you would know that on May 12, 2018, it was National Scratch Day across the world! How is the world celebrating, you might ask? Well, these are some tweets around the world celebrating!! 😺😺🐱🐱

Cupcake Recipes by Michaela FeldBLUM
Sunshine S’more Cupcake: Serves 218
Ingredients 1⁄4 oz package french vanilla cake mix 2 tbsp graham cracker crumbs 1 1⁄2 cup water 3 egg white 24 milk chocolate candy, kisses 1⁄2 cup graham cracker crumbs 7 oz jar marshmallow cream topping Directions:
|
Cherry Limeade Cupcakes: Yield: 12 cupcakes
Ingredients
Cherry Limeade Cupcakes: Yield: 12 cupcakes
Ingredients
- 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 3/4 cup cake flour
- 1 tsp baking powder
- 1/8 tsp baking soda
- 1/4 tsp salt
- 3/4 cup + 2 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 1 Tbsp lime zest
- 1/2 cup unsalted butter , softened
- 1 large egg
- 2 large egg whites
- 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup + 3 Tbsp buttermilk
- 1 1/2 Tbsp fresh lime juice
- 1 Tbsp fresh lime juice
- 1 Tbsp granulated sugar
- 3/4 cup butter (I used 1/2 cup unsalted and 1/4 cup salted)
- 2 1/2 - 2 3/4 cup powdered sugar
- Few drops red food coloring (optional)
- 3 Tbsp maraschino cherry juice
- 12 maraschino cherries , lime slices and sugar crystal sprinkles
- Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Sift all-purpose flour and cake flour into a mixing bowl. Add baking powder, baking soda and salt and whisk 20 seconds, set aside.
- In a food processor, pulse together 3/4 cup + 2 Tbsp granulated sugar with lime zest until finely ground, about 1 minute. In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whip together butter with lime sugar mixture until pale and fluffy (if you don't have the paddle attachment that constantly scrapes bowl, then occasionally throughout entire mixing process, stop mixer and scrape down sides and bottom of bowl). Mix in egg, then mix in egg whites one at a time, adding in vanilla with second egg white.
- In the liquid measuring cup used to measure buttermilk, whisk together buttermilk with lime juice. Working in three separate batches, beginning and ending with flour mixture, add 1/3 of the flour mixture alternating with 1/2 of the buttermilk mixture and mixing just until combined after each addition. Divide batter among 12 paper lined muffin cups. Bake in preheated oven until toothpick inserted into center of cupcake comes out clean, about 18 - 20 minutes. Remove from oven and allow to cool several minutes in muffin tin, then transfer to a wire rack to cool slightly while preparing simple syrup.
- For the simple syrup:
- In a small bowl, whisk together 1 Tbsp lime juice with 1 Tbsp granulated sugar until sugar has dissolved. Brush mixture over warm cupcakes (use all of it, I did about 2 light coats over each cupcake). Allow cupcakes to cool completely.
- For the frosting:
- In the bowl of an electric stand mixer fitted with the paddle attachment, whip butter until pale and fluffy. Mix in 1/4 cup powdered sugar then mix in maraschino cherry juice and optional red food coloring. With mixer set on low speed, slowly add remaining 2 1/4 cups powdered sugar (add an additional 1/4 as needed to reach desired consistency), then increase mixer to medium and whip until light and fluffy. Pipe or spread over cooled cupcakes, top with each with a maraschino cherry and a lime slice and sprinkle edges with sprinkles if desired.
