APRIL 2015Marine ScienceBy: Caroline Lynch
On January 6, 2015, the 7th and 8th grade Explore students got to experience what it’s like being a marine biologist through a fun and educational lab. We got to look at X-rays of different marine animals, and we observed them to find sickness or injury while looking at blood cell counts as well as the X-rays themselves. We learned a lot about animals such as seals, fish, and a seahorse! To top it all off, a real marine biologist from Mystic Aquarium came to teach us what it’s like to actually treat injured animals. She even brought in a baby alligator from the aquarium! Gator 125 is a baby American Alligator from Mystic’s alligator home. I asked one of the 7th grade Explore students, Julia Fiedziukiewicz, what she thought about the whole experience. She said, “overall the whole experience was so much fun. I was learning so much, because i wasn’t sitting in a classroom while writing notes. The hands-on aspect of the whole experience is what I enjoyed the most.” Thank you, Julia! This lab was the third activity we have gotten to enjoy with Mystic this year. We’ve also had a close encounter with several crabs and mollusks, and we even got to dissect a squid! In the end, this trio of labs was a really exciting and fun learning experience. The Water Cycle StoryBy Matt Sousa
When I was a little raindrop in a cloud, I felt trapped. Then I was pushed off the cloud by some mysterious force saying, “It’s time for you to go!” I fell, not knowing what would happen. I looked to my left, and I saw another raindrop yelling, “Precipitation time!” as he smiled. I prepared for impact and then…SPLAT! I hit a mountain. I started to slide down as surface runoff. I knew that I would eventually end up in freshwater or saltwater. I could see a small stream that was about 20 feet away. I didn’t want to become groundwater by staying in one spot because I knew I would have to go through percolation first. So I raced down to the stream, but then I remembered that I was a raindrop and I didn’t have any legs. Anyway, I saw my raindrop friends, Bob, Steve, and John, welcome me at the freshwater stream. Bob said, “The journey begins towards saltwater. Here we go…” All of a sudden, Bob started to float out of the water. “Nevermind. Looks like I’m evaporating.” I guess the sun’s heat was strong enough to turn Bob’s liquid water into water vapor. After Bob evaporated, Steve and John started to float. Then it was my turn. As water vapor, we soared high into the sky, but it was getting really cold. I mean really, really cold. I wondered where we were going, and then it hit me. We have superpowers. After all, we can fly and fight crime. Then I thought that my theory about us having superpowers was a little bit crazy. I thought about what was happening, and I remembered about condensation which is when water vapor turns back into liquid water. I knew we were going to become clouds eventually. Then I’ll be right back where I started from.

Newington, CTHello Spring!Grade 5 Classes FInish Japan Unit by Visiting SakeGrade 5 students have been learning much about the country of Japan and all of its culture. It seemed it was definitely time to get a real "taste" of Japanese culture, so they set out to visit Sake, a Japanese hibachi restaurant in Wethersfield. If you check out the video, we think you'll agree it was a big hit!
MK Students Recognized The Connecticut Science & Engineering Fair is a yearly, statewide science and engineering fair open to all 7th through 12th grade students in Connecticut schools. An important objective of the program is to attract young people to careers in science and engineering while developing skills essential to critical thinking.
The MKMS Team (Patrick Nguyen, Michael Stamm, and Anthony Carlson) were recognized in the CT Science and Engineering Fair with the US Air Force Award. Here is a photo of our Aerospace Engineers at the CT Science and Engineering Fair: Morning is better at 9:00By Amy Lund
What’s one thing everyone struggles with in the morning, getting up to see it! So I have discovered ways to make it easier for you, and your parents.
Number one, if you’re a coffee lover than this is for you; take a shaker and fill it with coffee beans. When you rise from your lasting sleep, sniff the jar to boost to your morning. This strategy can also work with Starbucks drinks, and any other jar-able condiments. Number two, if you have no time to make your bed than this is for you. Fold over your first blanket to the end of your bed. When you wake up just pull that blanket over all of the other ones. I recommend using your thickest comforter in this trick. I this really does help save time, and that’s why I use it every day! Most people already do this on most nights. Lay out your clothes on hangers for tomorrow. Also lay out what you think you’re going to eat in the next morning. This helps establish nightly patterns which prevents tardiness on your report card! Lastly for girls, braid your hair at night so in the morning you can just take out the braid and your hair is instantly ready for anything in the school day. If you’re not the best a complex multi-tasking, than this is for you. When taking a shower in the morning, brush your teeth; this way you’re cleaning every part of your body in half the time! I hope your mornings are a little better and quicker! PEP Rally was a HitWhat better way to come together as a school, show our school spirit and have some fun than a pep rally. In February, MKMS took part in our 2nd pep rally of the school year and from the looks of it, a good time was had by all! There was great music from the school band, awesome entertainment from our new dance team, and of course some fantastic performances in the Knock Out Basketball Competition. We are lucky to be part of such a great school community!
What does the color of your eyes say about you?You may have heard that eyes are the windows to the soul. Research shows that in a way, this can be true. Aside from showing your mood, your eyes can also tell a lot about you just by color! Are you a gray-eyed leader? Or maybe a lively blue-eyed person? Read on to see how your eye color can show your personality.
Brown eyes are the single most common eye color. Usually when you think of brown colored eyes, you think of light or medium brown eyes (or maybe the song Brown Eyed Girl). Very dark brown eyes are usually seen as black. People with brown eyes are usually creative and confident. Positivity, simplicity, and practicality are qualities usually found in people with brown eyes. They are polite, caring, and independent. Brown-eyed people typically don’t care much for earthly possessions, and feel close to all things nature. Even though they tend to be self-confident, they are very trustworthy. Hazel colored eyes are an exotic-looking combination of brown and green. People who have hazel eyes are usually spontaneous, fun-loving, and always up for an adventure! They are brave, courageous, and love to try new things. Equally mischievous and sensual, people with hazel eyes have quite the personalities! Green is a rare and mysterious eye color. People with green eyes are curious and outgoing- always the first to try something new and interesting. They are usually intelligent, passionate, and energetic. The vibrancy and joyfulness in the color seems to be contagious! There is something about people with blue eyes that is bright and lively, a very desired eye color. People with blue eyes tend to be peaceful, smart, and full of life. They seem to always be energetic and their most dominant feature is that they will go the extra mile to make you smile. People with blue eyes are also good observationalists, happy-go-lucky, and outgoing. Today, both blue and gray eyes are becoming more and more rare. Gray-eyed people are said to be natural-born leaders. They can usually be described as wise and gentle. They are open minded and always ready to help. People with gray eyes are said to be introverts and the least aggressive, even though they put all all their passion and energy into everything they do. People with gray eyes take things seriously, and they typically aren’t the ones you would see fooling around. They are creative and imaginative. In most cases, their inner strength, rationality, and analytic thinking make them powerful leaders. They are great people to be around and being in their company will have a positive effect on you! As you can see, science proves that eye color is much more than a beauty factor in our lives. Just by looking at a person’s eyes, you can guess if they are curious and outgoing, or creative and confident, knowing whether their eyes are green or brown. Even if you personally don’t like your eye color, remember; the fact that you have eyes at all is a gift. FunniesQ: What did the femur say to the patella? A: I kneed you.

Goodbye Drama:
A Salute to the Thespians
By, Allison Wnuk
Many involved with High School Musical can agree that it was an amazing time. For 8th graders, the last few performances and the cast party were an emotional time. Many 8th graders were very sad because High School Musical was their last performance of middle school. The emotion was contagious and all were very nostalgic. Let’s take a moment to remember some of the fun that was had in drama and a few memories that were made.
Let’s think back to the first drama rehearsal. All cast members sat in a circle and read through the whole play. Those were good times. How about the time when Mrs. Kuca did a split! That cast party was also whole lot of fun. There were always a ton of smiles and laughs every time we were together.
To all 8th graders, don’t forget the good things that came out of drama. For instance, meeting new friends, and making old friendships blossom. Be true to the good times and don’t forget to come back next year and visit.
Before the year ends, stop one of the cast members, or stage crew members, and congratulate them one more time for a job well done. Congrats to everyone who was involved with the drama production and we wish the 8th graders the best of luck next year! Bravo!

Academy Happenings
A Visit with a Pharmacist
Dr. Benjamin Davis, a Pharmacist from Walgreens at the Smilow Cancer Center, spent some time with students from the Academy of Biomedical Sciences at Martin Kellogg earlier this month. As a guest speaker, Dr. Davis made connections with students’ recent learning about the digestive system and protective pill coverings as he brainstormed and reviewed various medication delivery methods with them. Next, students were given a demonstration on how suppositories are made in the pharmacy and learned their importance as specific type of delivery method for medications. Dr. Davis explained that if someone is suffering from severe nausea, but needs to take Tylenol for a high fever, he/she may need to take the medication rectally so that they do not vomit up the medication needed to help with the fever.
During the demonstration, students volunteered to help him stir the solution and then pour the solution into the molds. He sealed the casings using a heat gun and then we waited for the medication to solidify before taking them out of their molds. For the last activity, students were able to create an oral suspension using the medicine, liquid mixture, bottles and labels that Dr. Davis brought in from his pharmacy. Each student in the group had a specific job such as crushing pills using a mortar and pestle, or adding the liquid to the crushed medication in measured amounts in order to create the suspension. Once completed, students poured their suspension into an actual medication bottle and labeled it with the appropriate dosages and warnings. The visit ended with questions from the students, as they were curious to know what about the educational requirements needed to become a Pharmacist, and the different types of settings that pharmacists work in. It was an engaging visit and we have a few Academy students who are interested in learning even more about pursuing a career in Pharmaceuticals! How To Stay Warm in The WinterBy Allison Wnuk

I have been recently mad at Mother Nature and the Groundhog for the Cold weather. I want an early spring just as much as the next guy. But since I am not a groundhog, I need to have a plan. Here it is
- Ask your sister to turn on the heat, or stop turning it off.
- Ask again, because she’s a teenager she is not going to listen to you.
- Get a blanket and hot chocolate and and curl up to a good book.
- Or watch TV instead
- Yeah, watch TV sounds good.
- Meditate until you believe your warm.
- Exercise and warm up.
- HA HA HA Lol, no just watch TV.
- Sing, just kidding, no really practice singing.
