Mrs. Lammlin: New Social Worker at MK
Click to watch the video about Mrs. Lammlin
|
You may have seen her in the halls, or perhaps you saw her introduction on WKMS Morning News. Her name is Mrs. Lammlin and she is MK's new social worker. She's here to help you if you have a problem or if you just need someone to talk to. Her office is located in the counseling suite. Here are some things we learned about Mrs. Lammlin: 1) She became a social worker 12 and a half years ago and received her Clinical License for Social Work in 2008. 2) She really likes MKMS so far!I She says all of the staff and students have been welcoming and supportive. 3) At home she has one pet. It is a dog. He is a black labrador and because they are big Yankee fans (well...okay so she's not perfect) his name is Bronx. He is eight years old, very high energy, and still thinks he is a puppy. 4) Outside of school she enjoys spending time with her husband and two young sons. They are big sports fans so much of our time revolves around watching or playing sports. 5) She is excited to relax over the holiday break, spend time with friends and family, and maybe even have time to do a little shopping. |
There's Something About Mary
As you all know, Mary Poppins will be gracing the Martin Kellogg Middle School stage this spring. What you may not know is that you too can be a part of the magic by unleashing your inner Mary Poppins. All you need to do is follow these five simple steps.
Step 1: Find your original catchphrase. Mary likes to motivate others with her phrase “spit spot” and “best foot forward”. This is quite effective, for when she uses the words, the Banks children spring to action and do as they are told. Perhaps you can come up with something half as useful! Shazam! and Bam What! may have been spoken for, but there are plenty available if you put your mind to it. Step 2: Wear sensible shoes. Mary Poppins prides herself on being at the forefront of the latest fashions. No matter what, however, wearing sensible shoes is a must. Who could be effective with blisters and bunions on their feet?! Put down those toe-squishers and mile-high pumps and grab some comfortable shoes. As they say, it isn’t the mountain ahead of you that is the challenge, but the grain of sand in your shoe! Step 3: Make an entrance. May it be down from the sky, through a chimney, or through the front door, Mary’s presence was never overlooked. Wherever you are going, show up and be seen. Dazzle your company with your wit and charm. |
Step 4: Always accessorize.
When you think of Mary Poppins, can’t you picture her iconic umbrella with a parrot handle? Mary Poppins is known for her style and grace and accessorizing is key. Be sure to focus on the details. Maybe a stylish hat or scarf would spiff up your outfit? Maybe you have something hiding in your closet that would give you that spark of magic that would set you apart from the others. Step 5: Embrace your inner and outer beauty. Some people could say that Mary Poppins is conceited, but those that know better would say that Mary Poppins is aware of her worth. You need to know that you are a beautiful person both inside and out and not be ashamed to admit it! If you don’t acknowledge your own beauty, then nobody else will notice. So, get to the nearest mirror and take a good look because, you sure do look swell! Now that you know how embrace your inner Mary Poppins, our halls of Martin Kellogg should become a wonderland! Every day is a jolly holiday with Mary and the magic is in you, too. |
Undertale
By Michael Silva
Undertale is a video game made by Toby Fox. It was made in 2015, but it still holds a special place in my heart. ...Even though I’ve never played it. Just seen videos.
Plot:
Long ago, monsters and humans lived on the surface peacefully, but war broke out. The humans won, and sealed the monsters underground….and many years later, a gender-neutral human climbs Mt. Ebott. They trip and fall into the underground, and its up to you to get them out. However, to get out you need to take the monster king Asgore’s soul….what will you do?
Locations:
The game Undertale is divided into four main sections:
Interesting Things:
In the game nobody has to die. See, you can do the ‘True Pacifist Route’, where nobody dies, a route where the player defeats ALL the monsters, and a ‘Neutral Route’ which is somewhere in between. The thing is though, the game remembers. For example, if you do that all-violence route, feel bad, and come back for a pacifist route, the game is aware of this and your pacifist ending will be altered. Some of the characters are self-aware. For example, one character knows about ‘save files’ (how a player saves their progress) and another knows about timelines...it’s all very cool. There are many secrets. For example, one of the antagonists (Flowey) can be seen following you if you backtrack in certain areas. And, the game runs on a ‘fun value’, so random things can happen on random playthroughs that won’t neccesarily happen on the next. Crazy…..but cool!
Characters:
One of the best, if not the best, thing about Undertale is the characters. They’re funny, great, relatable, cool, and serious and even eerie at times. Some characters are Toriel, Dr. Alphys, Mettaton, Undyne, Papyrus and Sans. Even some minor characters (monsters you encounter, or NPCs (non-playable characters)) are funny and great to encounter.
Personal Stuff:
I love the game. It’s one of my favorites, in all seriousness. Oh- and the soundtrack is amazing. Personally, I think my favorite character is Sans. He’s a funny goofball, serious and eerie at times which is cool, and is more powerful than he seems, having more knowledge than you think. About him being serious and eerie….Sans has this habit of...getting rid of his pupils/irises while maintaining a smile when serious. He also plays more of a role than one might think… before encountering Asgore, the Monster King, there’s this corridor known as the Judgement Hall, where, covered by foreground pillars, Sans appears, judges you on the EXP and LV you obtained, and lets you progress with either a cool/eerie remark. However, if you’re on the genocide run you fight Sans in arguably the hardest battle in the game, with awesome music. The thing is, in other games, EXP stands for experience points, and LV stands for level. With enough EXP one’s level increases, repeat. However, in this game, EXP stands for ‘Execution Points’, and LV stands for LOVE, which stands for ‘Level of Violence’. So, here EXP and LV are bad, but in other games, they’re good. This is made to mislead players. Oh, and also, Sans’ dialouge box’s text is in comic sans. … …. …. … All in all, Undertale is a great game with great characters, humor, emotion, and...did I say humor! One should really play it or watch videos of it, seriously. …. … You’re filled with DETERMINATION! … …. (If you play/see the game, you’ll get it…)
Rating- 10/5 stars!

Truth On How Thanksgiving Came To Be
(Source: “Adam Ruins Everything”)
By Michael Silva
First off, everyone always says the Pilgrims came for religious freedom, but many of them that came came for economic reasons (opportunities). Only ⅓ came for the religious reasons. The Pilgrims didn’t found their own village, they took over an abandoned Native village and changed it to ‘Plymouth’. There, the new-comers (won’t call them pilgrims, since most came for finances) grave robbed and dug down for corn. Seeing as how these settlers loved their corn, Natives told Squanto (who wasn’t originally a part of the Wampanoag) to negotiate with them, saying they can have some the Native’s corn if they fight their enemies. Basically, that’s how Thanksgiving came to be.

FUEL UP TO PLAY Zombie run was a success
If you passed by 155 Harding Avenue on a beautiful fall afternoon in October (October 25), you may have been surprised to see zombies running the grounds of Martin Kellogg. It was Fuel Up to Play's annual Zombie Run. Student runners were chased by zombies as they sprinted around our fields collecting stamps. There was no shortage of laughter and fun. This event promotes healthy active lifestyles andexercise. The zoombie makeup and costumes are an added bonus. This year some students even took part in a special zombie makeup session that they purchased with paws. Special thanks to Mrs. Leslie for coordinating such a fun event!
Showing Thanks and giving back in the community
This really is the time of year where we spend more time thanking our heroes, giving thanks for our many freedoms, and for giving back. The MK community gave back this Fall by participating in the Bags for Heroes collection and the Chalk Walk. Check it out!
Giving Back to our HeroesStudent Council ran the Bags for Heros collection in November. Martin Kellogg students and teachers donated over 178 wonderful bags containing items and notes. This was an amazing gesture to encourage and give thanks to our service personnnel deployed to the Middle East.

Annual Chalk Walk to thank our VeteransMrs. Hale took the annual trip to the VA on November 9th, after school with a group of MK students. They spent the afternoon filling the VA sidewalks with beautiful chalk drawings and messages of appreciation.
Hour of CodeA coding Dance Party took place after school on December 4th at Martin Kellogg. Students took part in the worldwide event Hour of Code. Many of our coders chose to participate in code.org's Dance Party themed code activity. Students coded their own dance video with great music and effects. Other activties included ozobot play, Dash programming, Scratch activites, and a raffle.
The Hour of Code was created to get students exposed to computer science and the contiuously growing area of computer coding. Millions of students and teachers in over 180 countries participate in teh Hour of Code! We are glad Martin Kellogg joins in the excitement! |
