Pizza Pizza! Fuel up gives students a fresh experience with pizza!
By Megan Hintlian
Making and eating pizza at school? Sounds like a dream. Well, dreams really do come true at Fuel Up To PLay 60. Mrs. Leslie runs an after school club called Fuel Up To Play 60 where kids play fun games and promote good health. They also do fun challenges and invite anyone who wishes to be apart of the fun to join them! Recently the after school club did the annual pizza challenge. The kids had to make pizza and at the end the pizza’s would be judged by the two guest judges. The featured guests this year were the principal, Mr. Lambert and the vice principal, Mr. Doran. The process of the pizza making was simple as well! In fact, there were only three steps! The first step was to order you ingredients off of a google survery, then you had to show up and make the pizza. Finally, the pizza’s got judged. This years winners were Kelly Saunders and Steven Blazuk! Congratulations to the eighth grade pair! Be sure to attend next year for some fun memories and delicious food of course! Be sure to check out the pictures below that captured the lively event!

PrincIPAL FOR A DAY: What would YOU do?
If you were principal for a day, what would you do to make our school better? This is what the sixth graders in Ms. Daigle's media class had to tackle. First, they had to make a list of ideas, and eliminated ones that were not realistic or that would not work in the long run. Then, they were assigned partners that had similar ideas and they got to work.
After writing questions to answer about their topic, the sixth graders had to find sources. They had to check if the source was current, accurate, relevant, and easy to use (CARE). Then, they wrote down notes and kept track of sources in a works cited document. Then, they created either a Prezi, Google Site, Weebly site, or Storyboard to present their information.
All in all, the sixth graders and Ms. Daigle enjoyed the final results of the presentations. Now, they are making Public Service Announcements (PSAs) about their topic or a different topic relating to school issues.

Helmets for Eggs??
By: Cora Tracey
"How could you make a helmet for an egg?", most people would say. Well, the whole entire 6th-grade science class did just that.
Students are studying concussions and the effect it has on people. They learned all about it and wrote a paper on the best way to design a helmet that would prevent concussions. Now, they are testing our designs on eggs.
The 6th graders had plastic cups, Ziploc bags, grocery bags, soda bottles, balloons, packing peanuts, bubble wrap, napkins/paper towels, tape, and more! We had to use these materials creatively to make a fun and useful design that would protect an egg.
They used eggs because of the shell and yolk. Egg shells are like the human skull because they are a protection source for the brain. Egg yolks are like the brain because it is very delicate but is mostly protected well by the skull.
Now when I said mostly, that is because of old helmets. Old helmets are designed to protect the skull, but today we need helmets to protect concussions. A concussion happens when the brain rattles around inside of the skull, and that causes brain damage and symptoms of a concussion. Some symptoms include blackouts, dizziness, balance problems, and many others. This is a problem because sports teams that have concussed players might not be well by the time they go back in to play. This is why this changed in 2016 when new helmets were being designed to further prevent more concussions. These helmets have been a success and concussion rates have gone down in the last couple of years.

Future Journalists: Fox 61 Student News Reporters!
Fox 61 Student News runs a great program allowing students to try their talents in the world of journalism. It is a difficult task. Students have to plan, write, film, and edit their news stories to meet the strict requirements of Fox 61. If they do a good job, the stories appear on Fox 61 and on their website as well. This year we had 2 pairs of students that created stories for Fox 61. Their stories were excellent and they will be invited to the Fox 61 Student News Awards on June 5th in Hartford because of their efforts.
Congrats to the following students on their outstanding news stories. Keziah Rodriguez, Denise Sanseverino: The Love Kitchen Helps Hartford Community Madison Prentice, Ava Tavares: Newington Community Honors Veterans - Aired on Fox 61 on May 3!! Once the stories air on Fox 61, we will repost them for the Newington Community to view! |

MAry Poppins: A Great Success and a whole lot of fun!
The Mary Poppins show was a big hit this year. It is amazing what Mrs. Daigle, two student casts, a teacher cast, an awesome backstage crew, talented musicians and choreographers, and many wonderful volunteers can do with some serious committment and hard work! It is safe to say that everyone involved had a blast and the audience felt it watching the shows. It is so much fun to see the talents of our actors and actresses as they grace the stage. We can't wait to see what Mrs. Daigle has in store for next year's show! One added bonus from this year's show was that all the proceeds from the teacher shows ($2,300) will be donated to the Newington Human Services Food Bank and the CCMC Neuro-Oncology Unit in Memory of Sophie Alves.

Courage the Cowardly Dog review
By Michael Silva
Courage the Cowardly...what?
Courage the Cowardly Dog is a show made by John R. Dilworth for Cartoon Network. The show has 4 seasons, one pilot, and one special which aired in 2014, well after the series ended.
What is it about?
Courage the Cowardly Dog is about a purple-pinkish, spotted dog who lives with kind-hearted and even naive Muriel, and crabby husband Eustace. They live in the town of Nowhere, which is in Kansas. Courage wasn’t always living like this, though. He used to be a puppy, alone and cold, living on the streets, until amazing Muriel came and picked him up. Attention to this dog makes Eustace jealous. Anyways, many monsters and bad things come to Nowhere, and with Muriel’s naivite, Courage has to save the day. Sometimes, though, the crew aren’t even in their American town. In one example, they go to New York City, and meet some sort of criminal who hates the cops. He calls himself Schwick.
Genre
This show is classified as a horror comedy. Additionally, it’s also classified as sci-fi, and black comedy, which is a type of comedy that basically makes light of taboo things, invoking amusement and thought in the audience. While some monsters may be creepy, Courage’s antics will make you laugh! (Hopefully!)
My Thoughts:
I really love this show. I truly recommend it. Coming into this school year, it was my favorite show. Now, well into the school year, it still holds up, with others like “This Is Us”. I rate this show 5/5 stars. Also, the show is still fun to watch for adults! One of my favorite episodes is “Courage in the Big Stinkin’ City”, where Courage and his owners go to New York and encounter a cockroach criminal. He asks Courage to bring him an evil package, somewhere within the Big Apple, or Muriel gets it from his dangerous pet of sorts.
Every episode, the show opens up with the newsperson of Nowhere talking about the show that’s about to happen. Here it is:

Note the monsters shown in the opening change from season to season, on a basis of which ones appear in said season.
All in all, this is a great show with humor, scary moments and theories from fans to go with it. I highly recommend it to people that love humor and/or mystery/horror. It is fun to revisit even as an adult. Here is the list off all the episodes: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Courage_the_Cowardly_Dog_episodes) |

The VoiD: Jump into VIrtual reality like never before
There is so much amazing technology out there in the world right now, that it is hard to keep up with the newest tools and toys! But over April break, technology teacher, Mrs. Baylock, jumped at the chance to check out THE VOID in Orlando, Florida. The Void is a business that is tucked away in the corner of Disney Springs. It gives visitors a chance to experience an immersive, virtual reality experience. Mrs. Baylock, her husband and her kids enjoyed their first experience so much as they went into the virtual world of Wreck-It Ralph, that they went back for another experience...as Storm Troopers in Star Wars! With each experience, the family suited up in vest and helment complete with VR goggles. The Void employees helped them suit up and coded in their characters that they chose to be. Then they sent them into another world!
Here's what they experienced:
Wreck It Ralph: We chose characters that were absolutely hysterical to look at and then we broke into the Internet (just like the movie) and played inside a video game alongside Wreck-It Ralph and Vanellope von Schweetz. At one point, we even had a food fight with pancakes and milkshakes. We could literally smell the delicious pancakes as we shot them at fuzzy bunnies coming at us! What a blast!
Star Wars: Secrets of the Empire: They disguised themselves as storm troopers, traveled to the molten planet of Mustafar, and they were on a mission. They were armed with blasters and orders to recover intelligence that would help the Rebellion to survive. They solved puzzles and even fought off a lava monster. In the end Mrs. Baylock's family came face to face with Darth Vader. It felt real, it smelled real (like molten planet and fire), and it was awesome!
