TeACHERS WIN IT In Kickeball! FUN HAD BY ALL!
It was a perfect October day as the students and teachers took the field for the Staff vs Student Kickball Game. There were some great kicks and some amazing plays, but best of all were the laughs and smiles shared by students and teachers alike. Even Marty made an appearance and at one point, as he ran the bases, Mr. Jaksina kicked a rocket past the outfield and caught up with him at third pushing him all the way home! Teachers walked away with the win 10-6 despite solid gameplay from the students. It was a fabulous way to spend an afternoon. Special thanks to everyone who joined in the fun. We hope to see you next time for a rematch!

Tis the season to show kindness and be a friend
The holiday season is here. Of course it is exciting to give and get gifts, but one of the best gifts you can give to others is the gift of kindness and friendship. Take a look around your class, your hallway, your lunch room, your bus, your neighborhood. Look for others who might need a friend. Be a friend. Take the time to talk to that person. You don't have to be a best friend. But no one deserves to be lonely. And besides, you just may discover you have found someone with really cool qualities. Start the new year off extending kindness. There is no feeling like the feeling you get from showing kindness to others.

Fuel up to play 60 Kick Off Event
In November, Fuel Up to Play started the year off with a bang with its Kick Off Event. The after school event consisted of stations for it's participants. Some stations included football throw, kicking station, hurdles, and even dancing. The event ended with a quick game of flag football and some healthy snacks. Special thanks to Mrs. Leslie and Mrs. Batista for bringing positive, active, and healthy events to Martin Kellogg. Fuel Up to Play 60 is awesome!

The History of halloween
By Hannah Nystrom
Have you ever wondered where Halloween traditions started and where the holiday even originated? Well, this Halloween, you’ve come to the right place. This is where Halloween came from.
Almost 2,000 years ago, the Celtics celebrated the New Year on the day that is now Halloween. On that day they believed that the block between the living and the dead was at its thinnest, they called it “the darker part of the year.” On this day there was always a festival called Samhain in which people believed the dead came back to life. At Samhain, people would light bonfires, pay homage to the deceased, and offer sacrifices for the dead. Back then, when people and kids dressed up, they wouldn’t dress up as anything silly like cartoons or objects, they would dress up in some very scary things. Those other silly costumes only started about 100 or so years ago. The people back then dressed up this scary to keep away phantoms and the undead. Back then people would set out food from door to door to please the unwelcome spirits so they wouldn’t harm the living. Not to please the little children, that were then busy scaring away ghouls and ghosts.
In conclusion, Halloween is now fun and joyus for children and adults, but it wasn’t always like that. Halloween actually used to be one of the most frightening and terrible holidays! Just be thankful that we don’t have to be so terrified for our lives! Anymore……

Kellogg Kommunity Helpers make a difference!
By Elizabeth Doll
This year we have a new club called the Kellogg Kommunity Helpers organized by Mrs. Hale. This club wants to make more of a difference in the community. They meet on Mondays in room #105 from 2:50-3:50. We currently did a Veteran's Chalk Walk soon and several more cool events that you can be apart of.
Student Interview:
Why did you join the Kellogg Kommunity Helpers?
I like to help people so when I heard of it. It called my name.
I like to help the community.
What is the best part of being apart of it?
The best part of being apart of the Kellogg Kommunity is being apart of a team.
When your taking part in Kellogg Kommunity Helpers it feels good to do something good.
Why would you recommend it?
I would recommend it because it doesn’t hurt to do something good and it feels good. Also you never know when something good could come out of it.

TECHNOLOGY IN REVIEW
3rd Annual Hour of Code
MKMS participated in the 3rd annual worldwide event, HOUR OF CODE, as part of Computer Science week. The purpose of Hour of Code is to expose students and staff to the computer science and encourage exploration and creativity with technology. Jobs in the technology industry are multiplying fast and there is a need for many more qualifed workers in the industry.
SCIENCE CONNECTION
6th Grade Science Inquiries
Students were engaged with another inquiry in 6th-grade science. They were given the challenge of proving that air is matter. All matter (whether it's a solid, liquid, gas, or plasma) must have two properties: have mass and take up volume. Therefore, the air in our atmosphere is matter, but students had to engineer an experiment of their choice to prove it since we can't see air. See below some the of the unique engineered designs from our creative 6th-graders.

Students made visuals to represent what science meant to them.

Chemically Bonding Their ATOMS
Sixth-graders were in the midst of working together to "chemically bond" their individual atoms to form a particular molecule that forms a particular matter (eg: table salt, water, ozone layer, rust)
This is a video thatGrade 6 Science shot showing a chemical reaction - hydrogen peroxide (reactant) changing to a new substance (product) because yeast was added. Evidence of a chemical reaction (atoms in molecules breaking away from each other and rearranging themselves to form a new substance) would be bubbles, gas escaping, color change, odor change, and expansion of original matter.

PJs for kids Day
PJs for Kids Day was a day to support and honor the brave young patients at Connecticut Children's Medical Center who suffer from serious illnesses. Student Council and MK teachers made a donation to CCMC on behalf of Martin Kellogg Middle School. It was a fun way to show our support.
