November 2014Box TopS Man NEEDS YOUR HELP!Box Tops Man is back and he needs your help again! Last year we helped raise over 2,000$ for our school and we'd like to continue the box top collection momentum throughout the 2014-15 school year too.
...only this time... There is an opposing force acting on Box Tops Man's home planet (Planet Box Tops). He needs your help to find, clip, and submit Box Tops to your homeroom teacher. This will help increase Box Tops Man's power in order to return and defeat the opposing force. Always remember...It's hip to clip! How Well Do You Know Your TEachers? Recent events that Student Council sponsored were the Halloween Carnival, Halloween Social, and Spirit Week. The Halloween Carnival was for kindergartners and 1st graders. There were games and crafts and everyone dressed up in costume for Halloween. The MK Student Council sponsored an afterschool “Halloween Social” for 5th and 6th graders. Students had the option to wear costumes and enjoyed snacks, games and music. Upcoming Events On November 26 there will be a spirit day where everyone wears autumn colors and if you wear a turkey, you get extra spirit points. On the Student Council bulletin board, there will be cards indicating what students and staff are thankful for. Fill out an index card to get on the board! There will be a Gift Box activity where students can pull out a piece of paper from the box and then buy the item that is on the paper. The item will be donated to a good cause. Adopt-A-Family is for 7th and 8th graders only. Students participating will buy a gift card for needy families in Newington. Behind the scenes of high school musical!By Allison Wnuk
High School Musical is the play this year, this play has been proven to be very popular because of the 108 people wanting to audition and become part of the show. That’s not all, when I was at drama yesterday I looked inside of the gymnasium and I saw a lot of people wanting to be stage crew. A lot of people want to use their nights almost every day until 5 making the show amazing. I love the play this year, just by watching the rehearsals I can tell this play is going to be amazing. Drama is a lot of hard-work, now we should notice the people who make the play happen. I would like to thank Mrs. Bocola and Mrs. Kuca for spending their nights preparing dance numbers and working with the Troys and Gabriellas to make their songs sound like they were done with professionals. Also for making sure we are all on the right track and have time to do what we need to do to make the performance even more amazing. Yet, we still have time to have tons of fun, like when we finished a scene and she did a split! Yes, drama is a very fun place for everyone who is there.
As I was saying drama is just an incredible place to be to have fun. It is also a good place to make new friends. I don’t have any more words on how to describe how great drama is. If you don’t know anything about High School Musical you came to the right place. The two main characters include, Troy and Gabriella; and I don’t think anyone can forget about Sharpay and Ryan Evans. High School Musical is all about the cliques. You have skater kids, jocks, cheerleaders, brainiacs, and theater kids. In conclusion, drama this year is going to be extraordinary. I cannot wait for the performances to be done. Drama is just perfect. Student Council sponsored Halloween Events
How MK Students would Change the WOrld In 5 MinutesRecently, 6th graders took part in a project in which they had to show how they could change the world in 5 minutes. Here are two great projects and ideas that were student produced!
Solar Eclipse 2014Have you ever seen an eclipse? When the moon aligns with the sun, it creates a shadow over our star, and in a partial eclipse, “takes a bite out of the sun!” To find out more about this astronomical event, like what the ancient civilizations thought of them, and when it occurred, CLICK THIS BUTTON!
Got Fear?By Amy Lund
Everyone in the entire world has at least one fear (maybe more), and today I’m going to tell you the most popular. (These aren’t in order from greatest to least (Random) The first fear that I am going to discuss is, Aerophobia (Also known as the fear of flying) most of the time people fear this because they’re afraid of falling out of a plane or air craft. So really this should be called a fear of crashing. This is a pretty popular statement, Acrophobia (fear of heights). Like Aerophobia, most people think that they are afraid of heights, when really they are afraid of falling off of heights or being pushed. Now this fear most 4-5 year olds have, and some teenagers also, the fear of the dark. This fear like many others, sometimes never leaves an adult for a long time. Like the other fears this one also has a different piece to it; older fear victims are afraid of the things in the dark. (Like if your sister’s barber makes a menacing shadow) Now this fear happens in most classrooms in our school, Kakorrhaphiophobia. (The fear of failure) this fear can easily be fixed. Go outside your box. For example, raise your hand in class, no matter if you’re wrong or right, you learn anyways. One thing that really creepy and crawly, is spiders or the fear is known by Arachnophobia. Spiders are one of the most popular fears. Lots of people have Tarantulas are actually very good pets. They don’t bite but they sure are creepy. Just make sure this year, your fears don’t take control. Helping OthersThis is the time of year when we tend to spend a little extra time thinking about what we are thankful for in our lives. It is also a time for giving back to those around you. Maybe it is a canned good in a food drive. Perhaps it is helping a neighbor rake leaves, pick up brush, or even shovel snow. Maybe it just means helping out a little more than usual at home. Whatever way you choose, find a way to give back to others this holiday season. You may find that it gives you a really great feeling inside...so good that you will want to continue giving back. Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Newington, CTFEATURED TEACHER: Mr. BruNEAUBy: Dariel Parzych and Anna Saunders
There’s a new algebra teacher in room 202 and his name is Mr. Bruneau! He has been teaching math and algebra for 3 years in Windsor, Hartford, and MKMS. His favorite food is pizza, and if he could be any superhero he would be Batman because he likes all the cool gadgets! Mr. Bruneau’s favorite animal is a dog, because he has a small dog at home and says it is “the most chill dog ever!” His favorite animal outside of the pet category is a panda. If he could go anywhere it would be Hawaii, and his favorite thing to do outside of school is cook. His favorite memory from his childhood is hanging out with his family over the summer. The weirdest thing a student has ever said to Mr. Bruneau would be (although there were many, many choices) “Mr. Bruneau, your hair is so perfect all the time. Is your hair made of chocolate?” His response was “Does it look like it’s chocolate?” which was replied by “No, I guess it doesn't.” Mr. Bruneau says that the best part of teaching is hanging out with his students and watching them learn.
school's first pep rally of the year was awesome!by: Katrina Porter
It was an intriguing day on October seventeenth, for there was to be an event in the gym. This event was the prep rally, a celebratory event used to represent MKMS in some sixty second challenges. The opening task involved having a stack of red cups with a blue one on the bottom; the first person to have the blue cup on the top of the stack won the challenge. Throughout the hustling and bustling of the task, our lovely Spanish teacher Mrs. Batista has won the fight. For our second round, the task was to eat an oreo that was placed on top of your forehead, however, only with your facial muscles. Sounds impossible, right? Well, not to Mrs. Crimmins it isn’t! It took this woman approximately two seconds to get it in her mouth, and she’s yet to explain how she did it. For the third challenge, a tissue box filled with ping pong balls was tied around your waist. What could this be for you ask? The main objective was to shake your body until all balls were free from the box. After a whole lot of shaking, Emmy Petronio had won the challenge. As for our fourth and final challenge, there was a stick attached to two tick tack boxes. Once more, the objective of this task was to shake, but shake your head wildly until every tick tack had flung out of the tiny box by the time of sixty seconds. In under sixty seconds, eighth grader Aliyah Garnett had shaken her way to the final winning spot for the pep rally. In the end of the day, there was an equal amount of teachers and students claiming the role of a champion during this celebratory event.
First Pep Rally of the YEar Was Fun for all!"I like how teachers and students battled against each other."
"It was exciting to have the whole school together having fun." These were just a couple of the quotes repeated by Kellogg students and teachers after the first pep rally of the year. The pep rally was held to increase school spirit, bring the Kellogg community together, kick off School Families for the year, and promote positive behaviors. Teachers and students participated in Minute to Win It challenges like the Doughnut on a String, Cookie on the Face Race, Junk in the Trunk, and theMad Dog. Supporting the fightBy Caroline Lynch
Strength. Courage. Hope. All of these are words you might think of when thinking or talking about a survivor of breast cancer. On Sunday, October 19th, thousands of CT residents came together at the Making Strides against Breast Cancer 5k walk. They came and all were, “the survivors, the fighters, the taken.” I got this quote from the shirts of members of “Team Kare Bear,” one of the many groups of people who participated. A group of 5 MKMS students made up the team “The Pink Bantams,” in honor of the Trinity College football team. The team members included 7th graders Madeline Jordan, Shea Devanney, Anna Saunders, and myself, as well as 5th grader Caitlyn Devanney. Shea Devanney even raised over $200 for this great cause all by herself. Great job, Shea! It was so great to see all these people come out to support such a great job. Try putting together a team of your own so you can join us next year!
5th Graders Partake in Day of the Dead TraditionMrs. Batista's 5th grade students made Cempasulchil-Marigold Flowers used during Mexico's Day of the Dead Celebration. Day of the Dead (Dia de los muertos) is a holiday celebrated in Mexico and by Mexican Americans living in the United States and Canada.
They celebrate after Halloween on November 1st (All Saint's Day) and the 2nd (All Soul's Day). The holiday focuses on gatherings of family and friends to pray for and remember friends and family members who have died. People decorate their homes and home altars with sugar skulls, marigold, candles, incense and pictures of the dead. They leave offerings of food for the spirits. They visit and care for the graves of their dead relatives and ancestors. Day of the dead is more of a joyous celebration honoring those that have left the earth. Your Sleep!By Amy Lund
Thanks to a trusted website I am an expert on sleep. Some facts might seem unrealistic to you, but trust me, they’re real. Every night you dream. Some people say they didn't dream but everyone dreams each night. The fact that you remember it, well that’s another story. A way to remember can just be as simple as saying, “I will remember my dream tomorrow morning.” You are training your brain to remember. It doesn't always work though. Actually, you can have up to seven dreams at a time. Things that deprive you of sleep are worrying about sleep, TV in your bedroom, sugar before bed, too much light, stress, negative thinking, and caffeine consumption. If you nap a lot you better stop. If you nap over 30 minutes, it will deeply affect your night time sleep. So don’t eat snickers bars before bed, especially this fall! Another element that affects your sleep is over eating. Your stomach is so stuffed that it has to process the food. Also, eating before bed can cause you to gain weight. Think of it, all day you are walking, talking and moving. Unless you are going for night jogs then I think that shouldn't eat food after 8:00. Since you probably are sitting in your living room watching TV, not moving, the food turns to fat. This is for all the lazy teenagers; you might take nap when you get home. Soon you wake up and it’s 5:00! Then it instantly will be a lot harder to sleep at night. You may have a lot of pressure to complete homework, go to practices, or rehearse your instrument. Homework I can help with; do one subject at a time and take 5 minute breaks. With sports, make sure not to over work your body that would cause not only mental stress but physical stress to. Finally, maybe during your breaks, rehearse your instrument so you are ready for lessons each week. So now you know that sleep really is important. Bad for you, you’re parents, your friends, and even your teachers! So hopefully this will help change your “Zzz”. "World of Lucid Dreaming: Learn How to Control Your Dreams." Grade 7 Students visited Plimoth Plantation this November, putting their Social Studies knowledge to work. They visited the Mayflower ll, the Wampanoag Village, and the English Village. All three were designed to make you feel like you stepped right back into the 1600's. Students toured the grounds and talked with actors who played the parts of shipmen, natives, Englishmen and many others! It was a great trip!

What's MK's Biomedical Academy ALl About?
Academy Students tell all!
By Brooke Haaser
Ever wonder what the Academy of Biomedical Sciences is like? What the students do? Although we take the same basic classes; language arts, social studies, math, and science, we also take three extra classes; principles of biomedical sciences (also known as PBS), health science careers explorations, and biomedical innovations. In PBS which is our period three, we are currently learning about the Black Plague, which has also been called the Black Death, and the Bubonic Plague. To learn more about this topic we have played games, watched videos, done worksheets, filled out maps, and we even listened to a song about it. In the past we have done presentations on diseases and have learned about Ebola, viruses, bacteria, and your immune system. Then in health science careers explorations, our period 8, we have four modules; nursing, veterinary, clinical lab practices, and sports medicine. In nursing you learn how to so things such as taking blood, and stitching a fake leg. For veterinary you learn how to take blood from a dog and how to give CPR to a dog. Urinalysis and taking blood sugar are things you learn in clinical lab practices, urinalysis is analysis of urine. Finally in sports medicine you learn the effects of steroids and how to bandage a foot. Our last class is biomedical innovations, our period 9, where we act as biomedical engineers and design devices that will help with medical concerns or issues. Right now in biomedical innovations we are designing eye wear to protect someone’s eye when they are doing something that may cause anything to harm the eye. Recently we have had to design a product that would take a foreign object out of the ear. Although we spend most of our school day in the academy we have three classes with the regular 7th grade. Our first 2 periods we have language arts and social studies and for our period 4 class, we either have wellness or world language, in the middle of the year we will switch these classes. For example, if you’re in wellness, when we switch you’ll then be in world language and the other way around if you start the year with world language. Some perks of being in the academy are that we get computers; these computers are touchscreen and can be turned into a tablet. Another perk is that we get to use TI-inspires which is like a cross between a calculator and a computer. The final perk is we get to go on extra field trips like going to a local Humane Society. In the academy we wear lab coats, on the lab coats there is the academy logo, we wear these lab coats to all of our academy classes, including math and science. So, 5th and 6th graders I hope you consider the academy and to everyone I hope you learned more about the academy and what it’s like. |

You may think ohh… I don’t want to do the academy because you have an extended day. But, behind those academy doors we are having an enjoyable time even sometimes we get a little crazy. So, it’s really more of a reason to like the Academy Biomedical Sciences, if you think about it.
There are a ton of things we do in the academy and more to come. The kinds of things we do are really awesome. For example right now for Health and Science Careers we are researching different kinds of careers and I am doing a Physician Assistant. Then we make a video with our computers that we get to take home. That’s just what we are doing in class right now.
And the fun continues in Innovations. In the beginning of the year we had a design challenge to make an ear device to get items out of the ear model we made. After of course then we did a presentation about it. Now that is cool. Recently we have been learning about the human eye and how it works. Our actual project part of it is making protective eye wear for different sports. What about those field trips we go on they are incredible. How we get to see other people do the jobs we are learning about like the Humane Society we went to. See now you know the inside scoop of the academy.

I think the academy is really fun. I honestly thought it would be boring with nerdy annoying kids. But its not! The academy is really fun and the kids in it are really funny and cool. We learned about the ear and then we created a device that can take out objects from the ear. We had to take out a pom-pom ball, a pebble, and a tic tac from the “ear”. It was really fun. I like making the object. Our two teachers of the academy are the best. Mrs. Freese is our science teacher. The best part about Mrs. Freese is her cheezy science jokes. And Mrs. Lee is the math teacher. She’s obsessed with math and is really funny. I am really enjoying the academy.
