Pep rally creates a roar
On April 22nd, Martin Kellogg held their third pep rally of the year. The rally included a rousing game of "Spencer Says", a game in which grades 5-8 participated in. It was not an easy game as Mr. Peterson quickly rattled off movements. One wrong movement sent students to sit on the floor and watch as others carefully listened and made sure to move on time, at the right time. Little by little, eventually a large crowd trickled down to a few student winners. Raffle prizes were then handed out to winners from the Star Board. The best was saved for last as we revealed our new school mascot: the lion! He came running out to the tune of The Lion Sleeps Tonight and the school erupted in excitement as he made his way around the gym giving high fives and dancing to the music and cheers. Students were asked to start thinking of names so we could give our mascot a forever name. During lunch waves students will have an opportunity to list the names they like and that list will be consolidated to the most popular, and from there students and faculty will vote on the name. We look forward to future events with our new lion and we welcome him with pride!
First Annual Kellace Awards A Success!

Fuel up to play 60 meets rooster company
On March 24th, Fuel Up to Play 60, run by Mrs. Leslie, had a gathering with the owner of the Rooster Company. Chef Ward is the owner, and chef, for the restaurant and was discovered by Mrs. Leslie on the FUTP 60’s national website. He signed himself up as a chef who is willing to volunteer their time to work with schools, and kids, to improve eating patterns at home (cooking & baking) and at school in the cafe. He is a very experienced chef who has worked with the Max Restaurant Group, as well as other restaurants in the surrounding area.
Chef Ward, along with a number of students, made granola bars. Each student had an opportunity to combine the ingredients and listen to Chef Ward talk about healthy eating and healthy alternatives to junk food. The bars were easy to create and the students enjoyed the activity. Here are some of the comments: “What we did today was make granola bars. This was very fun and was a new experience. They are really good and can’t wait to make them at home.” “It was fun. We made granola bars that I think were delicious. We had fun while making it and we will know how to make it in the future. It can keep us healthy and in shape.” “I had fun making bars made with different things in it. I liked how it came out, looked really cool. The process was super awesome.” “Today we made granola bars. They looked very good. It was super fun making them with my friends. “I really like this because you build it yourself and it tastes really good. I really enjoyed this! I can’t wait to do this again!” “I liked this. It was a healthy snack and I want to change up things for substitutes. This is one of my favorite fuel up to play 60 meetings.” Looking for something to do this summer? Want to make these for your friends and family? Here is the recipe! Chewy No Bake Granola Bars Yields: 24 bars 1 cup rolled oats 1 cup steel cut oats 1 c rice Krispies ½ cup dry cranberries ½ cup pumpkin seeds ¼ cup unsalted butter ½ cup light brown sugar ¼ cup honey 2 teaspoons vanilla extract ½ cup chocolate chips 1 teaspoon kosher salt Method: 1.) Weather ManiaYou may have noticed that lately the morning announcements feature a special weather report each day. Grade 6 teacher, Mrs. Tyler has built up a meteorology team with interested Kellogg students. Recently 6th grade students got to hear firsthand from NBC's Tyler Jankoski about the field of meteorology.

Battle of the Books Recap
Wallace Wins Again: Battle of the Books
By Paige Zajak
Battle of the Books is fun challenge for 6th graders who have a passion for reading. Each ELA class is divided into teams of 5 or 4 students. Together the students read the 12 books that are picked specifically picked for the battle. All teams read the same books, and once finished a book they have to complete two sheets about that book. One sheet is questions and answers, where the students come up with trivia questions about the book/s they read hoping to stump the other teams. Teachers pick the best questions to be asked during the battle. The other sheet is a story map, where students use to study and get ready for the battle. Once completed both sheets, the students show their ELA teachers their work and are given a raffle ticket. The more books and sheets you finish, the more chance you have at winning battles and the raffle. Students have from December to early April to start reading and studying their books to help their team. This year’s battle took place on the last week of April. There are 3 battles: The first one is the classroom battle where you go against the other teams in your ELA class. The next battle is the schoolwide battle, where you go against the winning teams in your school (the two winning teams are picked) But, the biggest challenge of all is going against John Wallace, which brings us to the final battle. This year my team and I (The Battle Busters) and the SuperStorm Readers went against Wallace’s Big Bad Books and the Speed Readers. Sadly, MKMS has only won Battle of The Books 2 or 3 times. This year, The Speed Readers won, but it was the closest game we’ve had, since the Battle Busters where only 3 points behind. Hopefully next year MKMS will win!
7th Graders Create Effective Public Service ANnouncements
7th graders in Instructional Technology have been planning and creating some fantastic Public Service Announcements. Check out some of these great examples from Cycle Seven technology students. They were pretty impressive with their scripts and ability to locate fitting royalty free digital media to tell their stories.

Kellogg Games Pep Rally
After a great day of Kellogg Games activities, everyone settled in on the grassy hill near the basketball courts for some final pep rally fun. The MKMS Dance team headed by Mrs. Batista and Mrs. Hale, gave great performances. Next, the raffle was held for our MK star award winners. Stars are given to students throughout the year for demonstrating the pillars of Respect, Responsibility, Integrity and Pride in different ways. Winners received gift cards.
Lastly, our newly named mascot made an appearance at the pep rally. Marty, Kellogg's new mascot zoomed in on a golf court, escorted by Mr. Murphy and Mr. Corriveau. The crowd was happy to see him, especially when he began to throw prizes into the crowd. A new sling shot was also used to hoist prizes into the air and into the crowd (just like the ones at college basketball games!).
From the looks of these photos, you'll probably agree it was a wonderful day in the Kellogg community today!
