NEWINGTON FEBRUARY 2020
Spread the Love
What better time of year to inspire kindness than around Valentine's Day? One small gesture like including a classmate in an activity or conversation, saying hello in the hallway, helping someone who dropped their belongings, giving a compliment to someone, or helping with a task at home can go a long way. Being kind to others makes people feel good. We all remember those moments when someone showed us kindess and made us feel good. So why not spread the joy?

Last week was School Counseling Week. So we thought it would be a great idea to highlight some of Kellogg's very own school counselors.
Mr. Murphy has been a school counselor for 29 years and at MKMS for 13 years. Mr.Murphy really enjoys working with middle school-aged students. He loves sports, especially football. He enjoys being outside, working with nature. He raises chickens for eggs.

The Bombing of Pearl Harbor
By Clara Dicks
It was a quiet Sunday on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. It was December 7, 1941. There were some Christmas parties before and lots of people were sleeping late. Then it officially started. A strange blimp thing was circling the island. It was full of Japanese bomber planes. They started bombing just before 8:00 am(about 1:00 pm here)on Pearl Harbor. The USS Oklahoma capsized which means it flipped over and sank killing 429 sailors. The USS Utah capsized killing 58 sailors. The USS Arizona sank too. It exploded killing 1,777 sailors. Then there are ships that were severely damaged(this a long list)
- USS Nevada actually got involved but sunk.
- USS California
- USS West Virginia
- USS Cassin
- USS Downes(which is a little weird because she went down)
- And the USS Oglala.
Shovel Knight (Game and Series)
By Michael Silva
Hello everybody! Today I will be writing about Shovel Knight, a platformer game created by Yacht Club Games. Grab your shovel or other unconventional video game weapon, and tag along for this lovely ride.
Shovel Knight is a video game that centers around none other than Shovel Knight. But he wasn’t always working in isolation, as a solo guy. He used to roam the lands with Shield Knight, his counterpart and significant other. One day, the unmatched adventurers climbed the dark Tower of Fate. Long story short, two came in, and one came out. Alone and grieving, Shovel Knight committed to a life of solitude. However, without an entity fighting for justice the land fell under the grasp of The Enchantress, and her army of skilled knights known as “The Order of No Quarter”. Now with no choice, Shovel Knight is forced to go back to his old adventuring ways, and with the tower once again “unsealed”, he hopes he can return to the Tower and save Shield Knight. Now that we know the plot I will move into the mechanics of the game. Shovel Knight is a platformer and indie game and his adventure has him going through different environments. Each one is different and distinct from another. This relates to the knights that make up “The Order of No Quarter”. They are King Knight, Specter Knight, Plague Knight, Treasure Knight, Mole Knight, Tinker Knight, Propeller Knight, and Polar Knight (and the loner who works by himself under no organization, the rival- Black Knight). Every knight is different and themed, with matching personalities. Having these enemies as bosses and having their stages matching their theme is a great concept, and an easy way to incorporate unique levels into the game. The style of this game is actually inspired by the Megaman series, something I’ve dabbled into in the past. Personally, I love it. Elaborating on the stage design I would be remiss if I didn’t mention how to get to these places. The game uses a world map, which is basically an overworld with many places located within. You can access the different places from the map, usually represented by some sort of icon or imagery. With this in mind, it is time to move on to Shovel Knight’s mechanics (specifically). With his trusty shovel our hero is able to perform an array of moves. He can dig (swipe his shovel), unleash blasts with relics and pogo-stick off of enemies. He will need to make the best of his weapon to succeed around the valley that is the main setting of the game. Another great thing about this is that Shovel Knight evolved into a little series. Basically, the creators at Yacht Club Games asked the players what knight should be the main dude for the next game. Eventually, Plague Knight, Specter Knight, and King Knight were chosen, and they got their own games. Back in the Kickstarter days the highest donator got to pick a knight to be playable in the future, you see. I will elaborate on this later, but this genius idea was later wrapped up along with the original Shovel Knight to create Treasure Trove, the general collection of all the games, even including the Super-Smash-Bros. like game, Shovel Knight Showdown. If I sparked even a fragment of interest in you, read on! It gets better.
Now it is time to delve ever so deep into what I adore about the game. It is not a stranger to humor. There are various points in the game that are comedic, but nothing over the top in the sense that despite comedy and humorous moments it is still clear what Shovel Knight’s quest is, the Tower of Fate often looming in the distance. There is of course the character whose only purpose is to tell jokes to Shovel Knight and therefore the player. There is another character who makes flirtatious remarks in reference to a boss knight, but then replies by saying Shovel Knight is her only true love in a relevant way. Another experience is in the Hall of Champions, an area constructed in honor of of the donors who gave money to the Shovel Knight project during the funding period. In game, it is described as housing “the founders of this great land”. Cool double meaning! Another thing that I enjoy is the “side stories” that go on during the course of Shovel Knight. I am referring to the fact that the stories of various “Order of No Quarter” happen around the same time as Shovel Knight, giving a sense of “layers” to the knights, on top of the fact that they are bosses; they have their own lives. These stories are described in the DLCs of Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove, where for one a clear picture of the past is painted with the knights’ dialogue. Like previously mentioned, there are additional games in the series featuring different protagonists; Plague Knight, Specter Knight, and King Knight in Shovel Knight: Plague of Shadows, Specter of Torment, and King of Cards, respectively. Each knight in these games has his own personal goal, and throughout their journeys you see the friends the make and sometimes even the people they betray in the end. Another thing I like is how in each game there is the introductory stage to introduce the player to the new mechanics. It is very smart; especially the fact the introductory stage boss has less HP (Health-points) than a typical one. In Shovel Knight’s case, the introductory boss is brilliant because he reappears later with purpose. This is Black Knight in Shovel of Hope. What his goal is you’ll have to find out for yourself! Ooh!
Now you, loyal reader, have enough context on the game. It is finally time for me to give my finishing thoughts on it; that means a review. The game is difficult, for sure, especially with all the achievements to be unlocked, like getting through an entire level without taking damage- easier said than done. This isn’t a bad thing; in my opinion it is good to have a game with an element of challenge. My ultimate rating for this game of Shovel Knight is 5/5 stars. I haven’t had the pleasure of playing the entire series with my own two hands, but by the way Shovel Knight is, I’m sure it is great, giving each game a new perspective within the same land. I can’t stress enough how smoothy each story either blends together or leads to future events, like the formation of the “Order of No Quarter” resulting in its presence in Shovel of Hope (the 1st game of Treasure Trove released- with Shovel Knight as the main character). This game- nay, the entire series is fantastic. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove is for the Nintendo Switch, 3DS, Wii U, PS4, PS3, PSVita, Xbox One, Steam, GOG.com and Humble Store (PC). This little gem of a game is wonderful- I highly recommend it. While you’re at it, check out the entire series! I’m sure I will!
All in all, the saga of Shovel Knight is so great and highly recommended- now that you know about it, one- go and play the game, of course! But also thank you for reading this. Below is a little article dictionary and links to my sources.

Looking for Adventure?
By Mrs. Baylock
Do you like adventure? Are you looking for something to do on the weekends? Well, Connecticut has a bunch of great adventure opportunities, both indoor and outdoor. These adventure parks are great for coordination, building outdoor skills, endurance and confidence and even for building friendships and trust! It is a great activity for families, friends and group organizations to do together too! Although there are many parks around our state, let me highlight a few of my favorites:
The Adventure Park at Storrs
This is a great outdoor park near uconn with lots of different courses available. You could easily spend a whole day here. Bring bug spray and pack a lunch. You can take a break midday and then go right back to the courses again. You can drop in but it is better to make your reservations online! Hey teachers! Teacher discounts and educator days here!
Nomads Outdoor Adventure
Much like the Adventure Park at Storrs this is also an outdoor venue. It is located in South Windsor. There are six courses here and they go right through the woods, so again, bring bug spray! You can choose the trail that is best for your ability level and move up as you get better. Be sure to make a reservation here!
Jordan's Furniture IT
It Adventure Ropes Course is an indoor course and is located in New Haven. Supposedly it is one of the largest indoor ropes courses in the world. There is a lot going on here while you climb and adventure on. There is a water fireworks show continuosly running and incredible sound and lighting that will help to inspire you as you climb, zipline, catwalk and free fall. One cool thing is the 50' high free fall jump you can do off the tallest level in order to exit the course.
So, get off those screens (says your technology teacher!) and get in an adventure at one of the many courses around Connecticut and beyond!

HanUkkah Traditions
By Clara Dicks
Hanukkah is a Jewish holiday celebrated in December.
This is the story of Hanukkah:
King Antiochus was a good king. He gave everyone food and water and homes. But, he forced the Jews to worship the Greek Gods, and if you don't, you die. So a family known as the maccabees battled the greek army and defeated them. But they ransacked the inside of the temple. Including the oil for the candles. But there was one drop of oil left. Surprising it burned for 8 days. That is why Hanukkah is 8 days long. Here are some other objects important to the celebration of Hanukkah:

Surprising it burned for 8 days. That is why Hanukkah is 8 days long. Here are some other objects important to the celebration of Hanukkah:
- Gelt! The Jewish equivalent to chocolate coins, Gelt is a tasty treat traditionally coming in a gold mesh bag, Gelt is often used to play Dreidel, a common Hanukkah game. This is what Gelt usually looks like:
- Latkes! A common Jewish food, Latkes is very simple, potato pancakes! They are traditionally eaten with applesauce and/or sour cream. Here is what Latkes look like:
- Dreidel! Dreidel is a popular Jewish game that stretches back decades. People traditionally use Gelt, coins, nuts, or raisins to play. The dreidel (spinning top) has 4 sides; Nun, Gimel, Hei/Hay, and Shin. Nun means you do nothing, Gimel means you get all the tokens in the pot, Hei/Hay (spelled different sometimes, kind of like Grey/Gray) means you get half of the tokens in the pot, and Shin means you have to put a token in the pot. If you lose all your tokens (you start with 10-15 (your choice)), you are out. If you have the most tokens at the end of the game or are the last one standing, you win everything in the pot. If you want to play again, just put everything each person has (including winner) and deal it out again. If you are lucky, you can come home with some Gelt to last you a while (or for the ride home….)Here is what a dreidel looks like:
- Menorah! The Menorah is a Jewish candle holder. It has 8 holes to put candles in. you light the candles using the shamash. This is the candle that light all other candles. You say this prayer. Baruch atah adonai eloheinu melech ha'olam ashare kidshanu bamitvotav vesvanoh leadhadlikner shell hanuchka. Then we open presents. (One present a night) This is a menorah:
the corner cub
Coming to a Lion's Den near you! The Corner Cub is an opportunity for MK students to give and receive. It will be filled with gently used clothes and shoes, as well as new toiletries, accessories, and miscellaneous items. This is an excellent way for students to support their community and we are always accepting donations! Please check out the flyers below!
